This is a good point which I should mention. That said, Florida also fails to outperform states with similarly high portions of retirees either (e.g. Maine)
Having lived in Maine, there are cultural and structural differences between the two which makes things different and not comparable. Retired in Maine usually are local family members versus a higher amount of out if state in Florida which typically have more financial ability to not work. Also in Maine, there is a high money output period of winter which makes a cultural drive to work to pay wor winter. Broad sweeping comparisons between states often avoid these specific internal differences which cloud analysis.
